Tornadoes hit the United States overnight. Tornadoes that moved through the Central and Southern parts of the United States overnight left extensive damage, killing at least 14 people.
David Roth, a meteorologist at the National Weather Center, reported that a low pressure system brought powerful storms to parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi and Missouri, with 26 tornadoes reported from late yesterday to early today, but they were not confirmed. "There's a high risk for more tornadoes in Alabama and Mississippi today. The chance is 30 percent. That's pretty significant," Roth said.
Forecasters said the highest possible risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms is tonight, as the storms regain strength. According to the National Weather Service, the storm will move eastward throughout the day and reach the Florida Panhandle and Atlanta by midnight.
