Danish MEP Vistisen's response to Trump on Greenland: "Get lost"

Danish Member of the European Parliament (EP) Anders Vistisen harshly lashed out at US President Donald Trump, who wants to buy Greenland. In his speech at the EP General Assembly session held in Strasbourg, France yesterday, Vistisen cursed Trump, who wants to annex Greenland to the US, from the parliamentary rostrum. Vistisen started his speech in English and said, “Dear President Trump, please listen carefully. Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for 800 years. It is an integral part of our country. It is not for sale. Let me put this in terms you can understand. Mr. Trump, go away," he said.

After Vistisen completed his speech, European Parliament Vice President Nicolae Stefanuta reacted to the situation and said that Vistisen's statements were unacceptable. Stefanuta said, "If the translation is correct, the statement you used is unacceptable in this parliament and there will be consequences for its use. Such a thing is unacceptable in this democratic parliament. Thank you. Whatever we think of Mr. Trump, it is not possible to use such language."

Vistisen later posted a statement on social media, saying that the European Parliament had threatened to fine him for using abusive language, and said, "When you express a truth about foreigners and crime, you face punishment. When you express a truth about Greenlanders, you face punishment. When you express the truth about Trump, you face punishment."

"We need Greenland"
In a statement he made earlier this month, Trump said that making Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, a part of the United States was a matter of national security for his country and that he would not rule out the use of force and economic pressure to do so. Trump, after taking office on Monday, took questions from reporters about Greenland and said, “Greenland is a wonderful place. We need Greenland for international security. I am sure Denmark would agree to this. It costs them a lot of money to maintain and protect it.”

“Our country and our people will decide what will happen to Greenland.”
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a statement yesterday, "We are Greenlanders. We do not want to be Americans. We do not want to be Danish either. The decision on the future of Greenland will be made by the Greenlanders. Our country and our people will decide what will happen to Greenland."
