11 countries take action against North Korea: Sanctions Monitoring Team convenes

Western countries have taken action against North Korea, which is continuing its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program unabated. The executive board of the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), established by the governments of the US, Japan, South Korea, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and New Zealand and aims to ensure the full implementation of United Nations (UN) sanctions against North Korea, held its first meeting in Washington, the capital of the USA. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, it was emphasized that the MSMT aims to assist efforts to implement sanctions against North Korea.

“We are determined to prevent threats from North Korea”
Recalling that the MSMT was established in October 2024 following Russia’s veto of the UN Security Council, which dissolved the sanctions board monitoring North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile programs, the statement said, “The states participating in the MSMT are determined to maintain international peace and security, pursue the global non-proliferation policy, and prevent threats posed by North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.”

Call to all states from the MSMT
The statement emphasized that the MSMT executive board is determined to fully implement the UN Security Council resolutions regarding North Korea and said, “We reiterate that the path for dialogue is open and call on all states to support global efforts to maintain international peace and security in the face of threats from North Korea and those who facilitate its violations of UN Security Council resolutions.”
