Speaking to the US press about the talks with Hamas, Boehler stated that the talks with Hamas regarding the release of captives held in Gaza were “very useful,” signaling that new talks could be held. Stating that the talks he held were aimed at understanding Hamas’ “ultimate goal” and ending the fighting, Boehler said, “The meeting was very useful. It was very useful to exchange ideas.”
Referring to Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer’s statements regarding the US talks with Hamas, Boehler said he understood Dermer’s concerns but emphasized that he had a clear goal in the talks, saying, “We are the United States. We are not Israel’s representatives. We have certain interests here and we have established mutual communication. My aim was to accelerate the negotiations, which are at a very fragile point, and to ask Hamas: What is your ultimate goal here?”
Boehler stated that he believes a conclusion can be reached regarding the prisoners in Gaza within weeks, and that he thinks an agreement can be made that will ensure the release of all prisoners, not just US prisoners.
“If he is there, I will bring him home”
Referring to the situation of US journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared in Syria, Boehler said, “I will go to Syria and do my best to find out his situation. If he is there, I will bring him home.”
