Social media has increased anger issues in society

Drawing attention to the fact that anger problems have increased in society in recent years, Psychologist Dilara Dalyan said, “The widespread use of social media, social uncertainties and economic difficulties stand out among the reasons for this increase. While social media allows individuals to express their instant emotions, it can also pave the way for negative interactions. In addition, major crises such as the pandemic process can increase people's stress levels and make their feelings of anger more intense. All these factors increase the situations in which individuals have difficulty managing their anger.”

Social media has increased anger issues in society

Psychologist Dilara Dalyan from IAU VM Medical Park Florya Hospital made statements about anger management. Defining anger management, Psk. Dalyan said, “Anger management is the ability of individuals to recognize, understand and express their feelings of anger appropriately. In psychology, anger is an emotional reaction and usually occurs in response to threats, disappointments or losses. However, failure to manage this emotion in a healthy way can lead to harming both the individual and those around them. Therefore, anger management is an important skill that positively affects personal health and social relationships. Anger management is not limited only to the behaviors exhibited at the time of anger; it also includes the process of the individual understanding the source of this emotion, recognizing its triggers and developing strategies to cope with these emotions. At this point, anger management can help the individual develop his/her emotional and social skills,” he said.

“The fast pace of city life triggers outbursts of anger”
Indicating that anger management is a quite common issue in society, Psk. Dalyan said, “Stress factors encountered in daily life, pressures in business life and social interactions can increase individuals’ anger levels. In addition, the fast pace and uncertainties that city life brings are especially important factors that trigger outbursts of anger. As a result, anger control problems have started to be seen more frequently in society in general.”

“Heartbeat accelerates, sweating and shaking may be observed”
Stating that anger problems manifest themselves with physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms, Psk. Dalyan said, “Physical symptoms include reactions such as increased heart rate, sweating and shaking. Emotionally, the individual may feel restlessness, helplessness or nervousness. Behaviorally, shouting, aggressive behavior and engaging in conflicts are observed. These symptoms can intensify in cases where anger is not controlled.”

“There is an increase in anger in society”
Drawing attention to the fact that anger problems have increased in society in recent years, Psk. Dalyan said, “The widespread use of social media, social uncertainties, and economic difficulties are the prominent reasons for this increase. While social media allows individuals to express their instant emotions, it can also pave the way for negative interactions. In addition, major crises such as the pandemic process can increase people's stress levels and make their feelings of anger more intense. All of these factors increase the situations in which individuals have difficulty managing their anger.”

“Suggestions for managing anger management”
Mentioning that a few basic strategies can be applied to manage anger management, Psk. Dalyan shared the following information:
“First, individuals need to recognize their own anger triggers. Knowing in which situations a person feels more anger is an important step in coping with this emotion. Regular exercise, breathing techniques, and relaxation methods such as meditation can have positive effects on anger management. Such methods help reduce stress and allow anger to be managed in a healthier way. In order to achieve anger management, individuals need to develop effective coping strategies. Increasing problem-solving skills, developing empathy, and using positive communication methods are of critical importance in managing anger. When feelings of anger arise, it can be beneficial for individuals to take some time to think and observe their feelings. This helps them avoid immediate reactions.

“Negatively affects mental health”
Stating that lack of anger control can be a symptom of many psychological disorders, Psk. Dalyan said, “For example, conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and borderline personality disorder can make it difficult for individuals to manage their feelings of anger. Such disorders can negatively affect a person’s mental health and increase angry outbursts. For this reason, anger problems should be taken seriously and the necessary professional help should be sought.

"Anger management treatment"
Noting that anger management treatment will be shaped according to the needs of the individual, Psk. Dalyan said, “Individual therapies, group therapies, and behavioral therapies are among the effective methods for anger management. While therapists help individuals develop strategies for coping with anger, they also contribute to increasing their emotional intelligence. “Getting professional support helps individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms and manage anger issues,” he explained.

“It can be a precursor to stress disorders.”
Reminding that frequent angry outbursts are not limited to a single problem but can be a sign of many psychological illnesses, Psk. Dalyan said, “Various disorders such as depression, stress disorders, bipolar disorder and anti-social personality disorder can trigger angry outbursts. Therefore, it is extremely important for individuals to seek help from a professional expert when such symptoms are observed. As a result, anger management is a critical issue in terms of both individual mental health and social relationships. Raising awareness in society on this issue and encouraging professional support is of vital importance for the general health of both individuals and society. Anger can be an empowering emotion when managed correctly; otherwise, it can have devastating consequences. Therefore, education and awareness-raising activities on anger management should be considered as a part of modern life.”
