It turned out that saw buoys were used in the floating barrier, which was started to be installed on the Rio Grande River on the Mexican border by the US state of Texas administration last month. Democrat Sylvia Garcia, Member of the US House of Representatives, released images of the saw buoys, urging Texas Governor Greg Abbott to immediately end this cruel and inhumane practice.
Governor Abbott argues that the floating barrier project, which came to the agenda with the announcement made last June and started to be built in July, was implemented to prevent irregular migrants from crossing into the USA, while US President Joe Biden accuses his government of being inadequate in this regard.
Body of two immigrants found
Mexican authorities said in a statement that on August 3 and 4, the bodies of two migrants were found near buoys on the Rio Grande River. It was stated that one of the immigrants who lost their lives was 20 years old of Honduran origin, and the identity of the other immigrant has not been determined yet.
Note from Mexico to the USA
While Mexico sent 2 diplomatic notes to the US government due to the floating barrier project, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena had requested the removal of the buoys in a meeting with her US counterpart Antony Blinken recently.
US government sues for barriers
The controversial barrier project was opposed by the US government as it could cause human and environmental problems, and the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Texas local government last July to have the barriers removed.
