Prof. Dr. Levent Eraslan: "Urgent measures should be taken for TikTok"

Eraslan stated that there are 30 million TikTok users in Turkey and that ministries should take urgent measures. Eraslan said, "The social media platform called Tiktok , originating from China , has had a very increasing frequency in our country, especially in the last five years. Turkish people use Tiktok for almost 21 hours a month . With this figure, it is the second platform after Instagram with 23 hours, and it is the second platform of approximately 86 million people. Millions of people use Tiktok , and when we look at it, we see that the majority of Tiktok users are in the 18-24 age group and share videos that are very different, strange, absurd, and outside the moral values of the society. This application, called ByteDance in China, is known all over the world . It attracts a big reaction at the moment and many undesirable behaviors are seen, especially in giving gifts, giving money and in live broadcasts that open uncontrolled at night. So what should be done? First of all, as a digital friend, we need to look at what parents, young people and children do on this platform and their digital footprints. We need to provide them with training on issues such as privacy violations and sharing of personal data. Especially 02.00-05.00 at night is the criminal time zone. Here we need to pay attention to what children do, and we should especially explain to our children that the videos shared on Tiktok cause privacy violations and tell them to make their own Tiktok settings. We also need to tell them what to do in case of attacks coming from TikTok or any social engineering attacks. Because people shoot very different and different videos on Tiktok due to motivations such as making money, being approved, being ahead, and showing themselves in the process. "When we remember the children and young people who died while shooting videos in the past years, precautions need to be taken in this regard," he said.
