At the beginning of the treatment, being at a healthy weight, doing sports, lowering insulin levels, staying away from smoking and alcohol, PCOS can lead to important problems such as diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome in the long term if not treated.

Medipol University Esenler Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Instructor Member Emine Zeynep Yılmaz gave important warnings about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. Dr. Instructor Stating that polycystic ovary syndrome is defined as the accumulation of many small and benign cysts in the ovary, Yılmaz said, “The ultrasound image is called follicles in the ovaries, arranged like a large number of pearl necklaces. There are effects such as menstrual irregularity (especially long-term periods), hair growth, acne, and weight gain. In the long term, it can lead to important problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infertility, depression, anxiety disorders, and metabolic syndrome. Although the exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is not known, Genetics and family history play an important role. In this disease, hormonal irregularities occur with the increase in insulin level. High levels of insulin hormone also cause high levels of male hormones. Elevated male hormones (androgens) disrupt ovulation in the body. For this reason, it leads to results such as menstrual irregularity, inability to see menstruation and inability to have children.

“Every woman has different symptoms”
Noting that the symptoms of PCOS are different in every woman, Dr. Instructor Member Yılmaz continued as follows: “Under normal conditions, it is normal to have menstrual irregularities in the first 3 years following the onset of menstruation. The normal menstrual cycle occurs every 21-35 days, including menstrual days, and frequent or prolonged menstrual delays outside of these periods are considered abnormal. In this syndrome, the intervals between periods are usually very long. Male pattern hair growth is also important as an increase in hair growth, which is seen in midline hair. Stiff hairs under the chin, face, chest, abdomen and back may be due to PCOS. In addition, acne, hair loss (again, male type), fat in the abdomen, thickened skin areas on the neck, arms, chest or thighs can be seen. The appearance of polycystic ovaries on ultrasound in a person does not directly diagnose PCOS. This is a very important issue. The presence of one of the symptoms such as menstrual irregularity or hair growth, acne, obesity along with the ultrasound image is important in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome. Likewise, the disease does not cause the same symptoms and the same discomfort in every woman. For this reason, people with the diagnosis should be treated for complaints. Infertility, obesity, hair growth may not be seen in every polycystic ovary syndrome.

“Even 5 percent weight loss can induce ovulation”
Dr. Instructor Pointing out that PCOS requires treatment for complaints, its member Yılmaz gave the following information: “A good diet and regular exercise are a must for every diagnosed person. At the beginning of the treatment, being at a healthy weight, doing sports, lowering insulin levels, avoiding smoking and alcohol. Weight loss plays a very important role in the treatment of menstrual irregularity. Even 5 percent weight loss initiates ovulation and thus provides great benefits in patients who want a child. In cases such as menstrual irregularity, hair growth, acne, if the doctor deems it appropriate, birth control pills can be started, which, by reducing the male hormone, corrects conditions such as hair growth and acne in the body due to polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as making it easier to have a child as it regulates ovarian functions. If the birth control pill cannot be used, there are menstrual regulators that can be used on certain days of the month. The problem of infertility, which is more common especially in obese patients, can be solved by losing weight, as it has been stated before. In addition, some drugs that facilitate ovulation and ensure the growth of eggs can be used under the control of a doctor. If ovulation cannot be achieved with oral medications, injection method can be used. If the egg is obtained, vaccination and again failure occurs, in vitro fertilization may be required.” If ovulation cannot be achieved with oral medications, injection method can be used.
