The US announced sanctions on Iran, which launched a missile attack on Israel on October 1. The US State Department said in a statement, “The US has clearly stated that we will make Iran pay for the consequences of its actions. To this end, we are taking steps today to cut off the revenue streams that the Iranian regime uses to finance its nuclear program and missile development, to support its proxies and partners, and to perpetuate the conflict in the Middle East.”

The statement, which also provided details of the sanctions, said, “It is imposing sanctions on 6 organizations engaged in oil trade in Iran and defining 6 ships as blocked goods. At the same time, the Treasury Department, in consultation with the State Department, is issuing a decision that will lead to sanctions against any person found to be involved in the oil or petrochemical sectors of the Iranian economy. In addition, the Treasury is imposing sanctions on 10 entities and designating 17 vessels as intercepted goods for their involvement in the shipment of oil and petrochemical products from Iran in support of U.S.-designated entities, the National Iranian Oil Company or Triliance Petrochemicals Inc.

The statement said the U.S. is committed to restricting Iran’s sources of revenue for its nefarious activities. “As long as Iran continues to divert energy revenues to finance attacks on our allies, support terrorism around the world, and pursue other destabilizing activities, we will continue to use all tools at our disposal to hold it accountable. These measures will be strengthened by ongoing close coordination with our partners and allies to address and counter Iran’s actions.”
