Professor from Medipol Mega University Hospital, Department of Chest Diseases. Dr. Muhammed Emin Akkoyunlu made important statements about sleep, which covers one third of human life. prof. Dr. Regarding sleep, which is very important for the body to renew itself, Akkoyunlu said, “Although it varies from person to person, everyone needs an average of 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Sleep comes rhythmically, according to the bioclock, that is, according to everyone's own internal clock. Two stages are important in sleep. The first is REM, which we call very deep sleep, a stage in which the brain and informational functions are regulated. It is very valuable to transfer the documents that we have cached in this phase to the long memory. For this reason, we see that Alzheimer's is more common in people who have a lot of trouble sleeping. Sleep is actually very important in terms of both forgetting the stress and remembering the information. Secondly, there are the sleep stages that we call superficial, that is, the nonrem stages. During these stages there is hormonal secretion and organization of the rest of the body other than the brain. If these hormones are not secreted enough, hunger occurs in the evening. In fact, this is basically the case when food places are open in the morning. If you stay awake until 24.00 at night, you have to eat something at 02:00. If you do not sleep in the superficial sleep stage, you may experience excessive weight gain or difficulty in losing weight.
“For sleep hygiene, you should go to bed at 23.00 at the latest”
prof. Dr. Akkoyunlu stated that there are serious problems especially in the secretion of growth hormone in those who cannot get non-REM sleep, and concluded: If we do not get enough sleep, many problems such as deterioration in tissue regeneration, cancer risk, early wrinkles arise because the growth hormone cannot be secreted sufficiently. The inability to secrete these hormones properly causes many disorders such as diabetes and blood pressure. In order to prevent sleep diseases, we should go to bed at the latest between 22:00 and 23:00. In general, we recommend 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep. Sleep hygiene is very important. For this reason, it is very important that there is no light in the room during sleep, LED screens are turned off at least 2 hours before sleep, and that it does not come into the eyes. While there are many diseases that we call sleeping sickness, sleep abscess syndrome is perhaps a condition that we do not take very seriously. However, snoring, which can be a symptom of these diseases, should be resolved immediately.”
